ViziMart

Group project | Entry for Microsoft Imagine Cup Serbia | 2012, less than a week

ViziMart is a concept solution for smart supermarkets and stores which helps people with visual impairment to navigate the store, pick and explore products independently.

Visual impairment is a problem that an estimate of 285 million people have to face every day (WHO, 2014). We focused on helping visually impaired people through already available technologies.

This is a group project created by 3 software development undergrads and one design student for the Microsoft Imagine Cup Serbia competition.

We proposed a system for navigation and exploration of enabled stores by using gesture controlled smartphone app with audio and haptic feedback, in pair with a system of tags strategically placed around the store.

User scenario

Milan, 46, low vision

1. Milan wants to explore the dairy section. He grabs the phone, scrolls through the list of sections and select dairy products.

2. Phone scans the tags placed on the floor and app navigates him with audio instructions

3. When Milan has got to the diary section, he starts scanning the price tags on the rafts looking for the milk. App gives him basic product info of every scanned product until he finds desired brand of yoghurt

4. Milan can hear additional product info if he wants to. He picks up the yoghurt and selects the checkout from the app. Audio instructions lead him to the nearest checkout

Research findings

After we had researched technical feasibility, we interviewed several visually impaired people to learn about their problems firsthand and see what they think about our proposed solution.

We have found out that during shopping they usually depend on a store clerk to get the required groceries, and don’t want to be a burden to other people. This led them to a pattern of short shopping sessions of only basic products, and always the same brand and type.

Prototyping

The area of the project which was entirely my responsibility was the app interface. I created a framework based on gestures, haptic and audio feedback, inspired by automated call center menus.

Gestural interface
